Video: Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! “Walking Is Still Honest” live at the Beauty Bar (Punk Rock Bowling)
Today is Memorial Day, but today actually has 2 meanings for me, it’s also my birthday. 29 Years ago my mother gave birth to me, and one year ago on my last birthday I took the above pic of her. Every year I wake up to my mom singing happy birthday, this year, that didn’t happen. If I would have known last years would be the last I would have recorded it. She worked her hands to the bone for me and did everything she could, so I could have a good life, and she is my hero. Thanks mom for everything.
Next to her is LCpl Budd Cote, he was a brother to me. One day he fell asleep and when he woke up we told him one of our friends put his wiener in his mouth. He freaked out and threw a knife at him, it was funny. He enlisted in the USMC and gave his life for the country, and today we remember him, another hero.
When my mom passed, I actually picked out her burial spot not too far from his, so today I get to visit both of them, which I do a lot anyways, but with it being my birthday and Memorial Day, today is extra special. Thank you both.
The annual punk rock bowling festival is taking place here in Vegas this weekend and last night I had the pleasure of seeing Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio fame along with a special guest, the special guest ended up being Laura Grace Gabel of Against Me! who was in town playing their own show earlier in the new night. I must say, she stole the show and it was quite epic. Matt Skiba on the other hand only did like 5-7 songs, and was obliterated on who knows what.
Anyone going? For those not in the know Matt Skiba sings for Alkaline Trio. (Taken with instagram)
Over the past two days, in conjunction with The Avengers movie release, Free Comic Book Day, and local shop Comic Oasis, John Romita Jr. was in town to break his own world record of drawing sketches for 48 hours. This was to benefit the Candlelighters of Nevada organization which helps fight childhood cancer, and to benefit his niece Jordan (http://heroesforjordan.org/). He broke the record today at 2pm and started at noon on Friday for a total of 50 hours, and he also broke the record for number of most sketches drawn in 50 hours. I donated enough money to get a total of 4 sketches custom drawn by him on variant covers (Phoenix, Colossus, Hit girl pictured) though one was for a friend (Magneto), and donated money to get a 30th Anniversary Special signed by Marvel CCO Joe Quesada, and John Romita Jr.
If you don’t know who he is, he has been the main artist for the X-Men, Avengers, Kick-Ass, and many other comic books for several decades, so most likely you’ve seen his work.
North Korea is one creepy fucked up place, I don’t ever want to go there.
